The “2017 Central Taiwan Lantern Festival” was held with great fanfare at Taichung Park and the Port of Taichung Art Center from February 5 to February 19. The annual Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month marks the finale of the New Year celebrations, often referred to as a “mini New Year.” On this day, families joyfully celebrate with fireworks, lanterns, and glutinous rice balls, creating an auspicious atmosphere of peace and happiness across the nation — hence the term “lively Lantern Festival.”

This year, coinciding with the Year of the Rooster, the lantern theme features the phoenix, the king of birds. Taichung Park hosts the masculine “Feng” (male phoenix), highlighted with yellow tones to emphasize its majestic spirit, while Qingshui represents the feminine “Huang” (female phoenix) in shades of red and pink to convey grace. The color schemes of the two main lanterns are similar to those of the smaller lanterns. The “Phoenix Blossom” main light show runs every evening from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on the hour at both lantern zones. In addition to lighting effects, the show also incorporates flower-shaped smoke in response to the nearby flower expo, making it quite unique. This year’s event introduces multi-sensory experiences not seen before, with interactive installations among the auxiliary lantern displays, as well as local delicacies and themed evening galas.
