The “Greater Port Fireworks Show,” the highlight of the “2017 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival Art Festival,” pioneered the launch of cross-harbor fireworks over a one-kilometer stretch along the breakwater between West Bay (Xiziwan) and Qijin, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle as thousands of crimson lotuses bloomed simultaneously in the sky. The first two shows attracted 520,000 visitors; the final “Greater Port Fireworks Show” took place at midnight on February 11th, lasting a total of 20 minutes and 17 seconds.

Following the huge popularity and economic impact of the first two shows, the final West Bay “Greater Port Fireworks Show” featured an added pre-show program — a special live performance by the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra — offering spectators who stayed up late and crossed the harbor to enjoy the dazzling fireworks an even more stunning multisensory experience blending sight and sound.

On February 11th, the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Yang Zhiqin, performed a selection of popular and well-loved pieces including the Taiwanese folk song “High Mountain, Green Water,” the opera “Carmen,” and the theme from the movie “Star Wars.” On the harbor square in front of Sun Yat-sen University’s main gate, the orchestra enhanced the final “Greater Port Fireworks Show” with high-level live accompaniment, delivering a double feast for the eyes and ears to all attendees.

Performing a live musical score for the “Greater Port Fireworks Show” requires precise timing to match predetermined fireworks launch points, and performing outdoors adds further difficulty — making it a major challenge for any symphony orchestra.
