The popular DiverCity attraction in Tokyo’s Odaiba, home to the 1:1 scale RX-78-2 life-sized Gundam statue, officially retired after five years of exhibition on March 5. A closing ceremony was also held, and as a piano trio played iconic Gundam theme songs, many fans expressed their reluctance to see it go.

The Odaiba Gundam has become a pilgrimage site for Gundam fans and a popular destination for foreign tourists wanting to see the real-life giant robot. Although the RX-78-2 life-sized Gundam has ended its exhibition, the relevant authorities also announced that a similarly 1:1 scale, popular robot model — the Unicorn Gundam — will be exhibited at the same location in autumn 2017, drawing cheers from the audience.

The successor, the Unicorn Gundam, is a character from the anime adaptation of author Harutoshi Fukui’s novel “Mobile Suit Gundam UC.” Expected to stand around 21 meters tall, it promises an even more impressive presence, generating high anticipation among Gundam fans and visitors alike.
