Travelers planning to visit Osaka should take note: The Osaka city government has announced that starting July 1, the accommodation tax will be extended to include guesthouses and homestays. Any guest staying at such accommodations will be subject to the tax if their nightly rate per person exceeds 10,000 Japanese yen; the tax will be levied in three tiers ranging from 100 to 300 yen depending on the total cost, and will be collected by the accommodation provider before being remitted to the government.

According to regulations set by the Osaka city government, the accommodation tax is 100 yen for nightly rates between 10,000 and 10,005 yen per person; 200 yen for rates between 10,005 and 20,000 yen; and 300 yen for rates above 20,000 yen. The tax is calculated on a “per person, per day” basis. This makes Osaka the second city in Japan to implement an accommodation tax, following Tokyo.
