As April and May arrive, it’s once again the season to admire fireflies. In Ruifang District, New Taipei City, there are several spots where you can enjoy the sight of numerous fireflies dancing in the air. The Ruifang District Office, in collaboration with local neighborhood offices, started the “Sandiaoling Firefly (Firegold Beetle) Culture Festival” at 2:30 p.m. on May 6, 2017 at Sandiaoling Parking Lot. The event is completely free, and also features snack markets, lucky draws, guided tours, challenge games, photo ops with giveaways, band performances, the distribution of a thousand lanterns, and local specialty foods. Visitors can come with family or friends, carry lanterns, and stroll through grass and woods to find glowing fireflies.

Sandiaoling is the most urban-close flatland spot for firefly viewing, located upstream of the Keelung River. With no factories around, its unpolluted environment fosters diverse ecosystems. From mid-April to mid-May each year, it’s the season when thousands of fireflies light up the forest. The area boasts three major waterfalls—Hegu, Pipadong, and Motian—as well as surrounding peaks, creating an ideal habitat for fireflies. Visitors can drive themselves or take the train from Taiwan Railways; there's no need for long, exhausting trips. The walking trails are gentle and safe, making it perfect for families. Follow local volunteer guides at a leisurely pace to learn about the ecology of firefly habitats, and join people of all ages in admiring the beauty of the firefly river.

By Car: From Taipei, take National Freeway 1, then connect to Provincial Highway 62 and exit at the Ruifang Interchange. Take Ruifang-Houli Highway, pass through Shifen Railway Station’s Cat Village, and continue forward to reach the site (approximately 50 minutes by car).
Public Transport: Take the train to Sandiaoling Railway Station, then walk to the venue.
