Afternoon Tea (Uni Afternoon Tea), a Japanese brand operated by a venture investment business under Uni-President Enterprises Corporation, is reportedly exiting Taiwan due to the expiration and non-renewal of its operating contract. Originally introduced to Taiwan in 1999 by Tai Chong Hsing Enterprise under the Japanese SAZABY Group, the brand ended its partnership in August 2007, which was a great disappointment to Japanese lifestyle goods enthusiasts at the time. It was later reintroduced by a Uni-President-affiliated venture partner, which expanded its presence by setting up counters in department stores across Taiwan. Both its lifestyle goods and food & beverage offerings gained a strong following among fans.

In recent times, amid intense competition in the food & beverage and lifestyle goods markets, some outlets have reportedly seen less than ideal sales performance. Nevertheless, they continue to offer black tea and handmade lifestyle goods experience workshops, allowing consumers who love Japanese-style living and Afternoon Tea to cultivate their personal aesthetic in different ways.

Taking into account market conditions and operational considerations, the Japanese side has decided not to renew the contract. The current cooperation agreement is set to expire at the end of July. As partnership contracts with different department stores vary in duration, individual stores will gradually close their doors across Taiwan by the end of 2018. The exact closing dates for all 15 stores nationwide will be announced separately by Uni Afternoon Tea.
