Many parents take advantage of the summer vacation to plan a family trip and enjoy happy summer moments together. According to an “Attitude Survey on Family Travel” conducted by Expedia among teenagers and parents in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, the results showed that over 90% of teenagers want to travel with their families to strengthen bonds, but 40% of parents in Taiwan and Hong Kong are reluctant to travel with their children during the summer vacation due to concerns about schoolwork.

However, aside from concerns about children falling behind in their studies, another reason parents in Taiwan and Hong Kong are hesitant to travel abroad in the summer is that they find it hard to fully enjoy the holiday with kids. To help, family travel expert DaKou shares five essential tips for family travel, making tasks like booking flights, hotels, and arranging itineraries much less of a hassle.
Tokyo Disneyland is a popular destination for many families during summer vacations
1. How to Pack Quickly: Pay Attention to Local Temperatures
First, check the weather and temperature at your destination. If you’re heading somewhere colder, it’s advisable to bring one or two extra sets of clothing, and warm-weather essentials are a must. Try to keep mom’s handbag as light as possible, and consider bringing some small snacks so the kids can munch when they get hungry while out playing.
2. How to Choose the Right Flight: Mind the Flight Time
If the flight duration is long, it’s recommended to choose a traditional airline and prioritize those that are more family-friendly. Also, the timing of the flight is a key consideration—avoid booking red-eye or unusually early flights. Aligning the schedule with the kids’ nap times can lead to a quiet and pleasant flight.
3. How to Choose the Right Hotel: Check the Booking Policies and Bed Types
When booking a hotel, pay attention to the booking policies—some room types allow for 1–2 extra children, while others do not. In addition, the type of bed is also important. For younger children, it’s generally better to book a larger bed. DaKou also recommends choosing a hotel that includes breakfast, ensuring the whole family can eat well before heading out for the day.
