Carrying sufficient money when traveling abroad is a common practice among frequent travelers for a sense of security. However, the Customs Administration now states that to prevent money laundering, in accordance with the amended and promulgated Article 12 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, starting from June 28 of this year, in addition to the aforementioned foreign currency cash and securities, travelers entering or exiting the country who carry cash in excess of NT$100,000, or gold and other items with a total value exceeding US$10,000 that may be used for money laundering, must declare them to customs. Otherwise, they will be confiscated or penalized.

Following the announcement, netizens have expressed varying opinions. One commented: “The difference lies in whether you declare or not. It’s not that cash over NT$100,000 will automatically be confiscated. Payment cards are so convenient these days, and many debit cards allow you to withdraw cash abroad, albeit with certain limits.” Another netizen said: “How is NT$100,000 enough for a trip to Europe or America? Not to mention, the gold jewelry and diamond rings one carries could easily exceed that amount,” arguing that it indirectly forces people to use cards.

However, customs clarified that although there are separate regulations for foreign currency cash and goods carried by inbound and outbound travelers, as long as none of the individual currency amounts exceed the declaration thresholds, they can be carried together. In other words, if you are carrying gold under US$10,000, foreign currency under US$10,000, RMB under ¥20,000, and New Taiwan Dollars under NT$100,000, all can be brought in or out of the country without declaration.
