Taichung’s Waterfront Flower Capital Gets a New Highlight: Huludun Canal Revives Centuries of Charm

Aside from recently popular new attractions like the Liuchuan Waterfront and the emerging new landscapes in Taichung’s 13th Redevelopment Zone, the Huludun Canal in Fengyuan District finally broke ground on the 27th, unveiling a century-old irrigation channel, spanning a total length of 1.2 kilometers,will create a waterfront flower capital landscape, providing a new green belt park and recreational space, while also bringing back the splendor of this “mother river” of Fengyuan. It will further integrate with the 2018 Taichung Flower Expo, attracting numerous domestic and international tourists.

The Huludun Canal in Fengyuan is one of the oldest irrigation channels in central Taiwan and a vital water source for the region. Located near Fengyuan Elementary School in the city center and adjacent to the train station, the entire river was covered in the past to meet local development and parking needs. After being encased in concrete for over 30 years, the Taichung Mayor decided to uncover the canal and develop a waterfront landscape and leisure space to revive its centuries-old charm.

The Huludun Canal Uncovering and Landscape Environment Enhancement Project has been listed as one of the major constructions for developing Fengyuan as a secondary urban center. After long-term discussions and bottom-up consensus-building, the first phase of the project prioritizes the section along Section 1 to Section 3 of Sanfeng Road, in front of Fengyuan Elementary School, spanning approximately 300 meters.
