Tainan’s road network is well-developed, yet there are still many emerging or local hidden gems that are rarely known. Coupled with the rise of independent travel in recent years, to offer travelers who love Tainan more new options, the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau has centered its efforts on “roads,” hosting the “2017 ‘Tainan Light Travel – Freedom to Roam’ Travel Itinerary Submission Competition,” inviting travelers to share self-guided tours that connect various road routes across Tainan.

Independent travel is one of the hottest ways to deeply experience life in Tainan. Whether it's a family gathering, a trip with friends who share the same interests, a sweet date with your partner, or even a personal journey of reflection, all can be centered around a road itinerary.

Tainan’s road network is well-developed. Whether by car, bicycle, motorcycle, bus, tourist taxi, or even on foot, road trips can provide unique travel experiences unlike any other. The hope is to share these experiences with travelers from all over through this itinerary submission competition.

The competition received submissions over the course of a month, collecting a total of 66 itinerary entries. These included national highways, provincial highways, expressways, city (county) roads, famous old streets and alleys in the historic city, Taiwan Good to Go routes, as well as several lesser-known private travel routes.

Mr. Du, whose entry “A Nostalgic Gastronomic Feast” won first place in the online vote for best itinerary with 2,017 votes, said, “This time, I designed a 2-day-1-night itinerary for the Baihe and Houpi areas. Aside from the beautiful scenery, the Houpi rice fields, Guanziling mud hot springs, and the Fire and Water Springs all showcase distinctive tourism features. But above all, the warmth and friendliness of the locals are the most precious memories for any traveler.”
