60 little sheep appear at historic landmark — new highlight of Chihkan Tower installation art

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the British firm Tait & Co. in Anping, the Tainan City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau invited the distinguished guests “Poetry Steps and Leading Sheep” to join everyone in visiting key historical sites in Tainan. The first stop was the national historic site Chihkan Tower. Starting September 2, domestic and international visitors to Chihkan Tower can see the adorable “Poetry Steps and Leading Sheep” gathered together grazing on the lawn of the tower square. The “Poetry Steps and Leading Sheep” will continue to tour various major historical sites as well as attractions such as Tait & Co., making them perfect for visitors to take photos with.

To enliven the operation of historic sites, enrich the content of site displays, showcase the creative and approachable image of cultural assets, and the Tainan City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau has promoted an art placement program in historic areas since September. In collaboration with artists, contemporary artworks have been introduced to create a unique atmosphere and generate buzz through the contrast between contemporary art and traditional historic sites. The aim is to attract more visitors for photo opportunities with this brand-new highlight.

This contemporary art placement project in historic sites kicks off with “Poetry Steps and Leading Sheep,” which have officially settled in at Chihkan Tower and are now meeting the public. They will subsequently be exhibited at various historic sites. “Poetry Steps and Leading Sheep” were designed by Tsai Kun-lin, a Ph.D. candidate at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. The name of the artwork is inspired by the playful Taiwanese Hokkien pronunciation “Si bu ling yang,” incorporating the imagery of fairy tales and the biblical story of Jesus and the shepherds. It features 60 uniquely distinctive white sheep. The artwork is full of childlike charm, and the cute and healing little sheep help people forget their worries, bringing positive and uplifting energy.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the British firm Tait & Co. in Anping. Recently, the Tainan City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau specially combined four major historic sites with ticketed entry (Chihkan Tower, Anping Fort, Anping Tree House, and Yide Jincheng) along with the Love Lock Pier Yeyang Battleship Park to launch a “4+1” Historic Sites Pass coupon. Originally priced at 250 TWD, the ticket package is now available for just 150 TWD.
