The world’s only gendered ramen: A popular Okinawan brand makes its debut in Taiwan

The must-try ramen from Okinawa, “Ryukyu Shimpai Tsutendo,” made its debut in Taiwan in March this year as a 21-day limited pop-up shop, drawing huge crowds and generating an overwhelmingly positive response. It also set the highest sales record for that area since its opening. With joint efforts from Japan and Taiwan, Tsutendo’s overseas store has officially confirmed its opening in Taipei on September 9, with plans to open two branches in the short term — both located in Taipei’s two major transportation hubs, one in the east and one in the west.

“Ryukyu Shimpai Tsutendo” is known as the world’s first ramen with “gendered flavors,” offering a rich pork bone broth for the male version and a light, smooth salt-flavored chicken broth for the female version. Originally, when naming the pork bone and salt chicken broths, opinions were widely varied. But the spontaneous idea of calling them “male flavor” and “female flavor” was met with universal acclaim and has been used ever since.

The first overseas branch of “Ryukyu Shimpai Tsutendo” officially opened on September 9 at Taipei’s Uni-President Department Store. The second branch will open on October 4 at Taipei Main Station. The Taiwanese branches will launch in a new concept format called “ramen izakaya,” offering not just ramen but also signature Okinawan izakaya dishes.

In addition, the Uni-President branch will begin a trial operation on September 5, with a daily limited release of 500 bowls of ramen. Customers may also enter a lucky draw to win a round-trip flight ticket between Taipei and Okinawa.
