Real-life Studio Ghibli scene: A ruin attraction resembles Howl's Moving Castle

In recent years, ruin attractions have sparked a photography craze online, as if all abandoned sites and ruins across Taiwan have been infused with new life. Deep in the mountains of Hsinchu stands a building that looks just like Howl's Moving Castle — this is the “Lidong Mountain Villa,” the entrance building to Lidong Mountain Fortress and a resting spot for hikers. The fortress itself is a military structure that served both as a command post and artillery battery, radiating a strong sense of ruin while boasting unique character.

Lidong Mountain Villa, brimming with a ruin-like atmosphere, is located at the hiking entrance at an altitude of about 1,913 meters. It was built over 90 years ago by Mr. Zhu Wanhe, originally operating as a homestay where hikers often stopped to rest. Now, the elderly man has turned it into a simple rest stop for hikers to relax and take photos. The villa’s distinctive appearance has unexpectedly become a popular photo spot among tourists.
