BBQ cuisine is a fairly common type of food in Taiwan. Recently, a BBQ shop has broken away from traditional styles and embraced the vibe of a Hong Kong cha chaan teng. It hasn’t been open long but is already attracting a lot of attention. At first glance, you might think it’s run by a seasoned master, but the owner is surprisingly young. The BBQ dishes are made by him, with his exquisite skills inherited from his father. The shop is located on the bustling Siwei 2nd Road, and once the BBQ items are launched, they’re almost sold out at lightning speed.

His father is from Hong Kong and previously set up a BBQ business in Taichung. With skills passed down from his father, he has brought the flavors of Hong Kong-style BBQ to Kaohsiung. What would have been shelves full of BBQ offerings are now empty due to sell-outs.

The space isn’t large and can probably accommodate around a dozen people. The interior setup is nothing like that of a traditional shop — the dim lighting projects an atmosphere reminiscent of a Hong Kong cha chaan teng.

The lengthy menu features all the classic BBQ flavors, along with fried rice options.

We arrived late and could only photograph the few remaining pieces left on the cutting board — you can imagine how good business was that day.

The shop offers free spicy pickled radish and clear soup. The spicy pickled radish would definitely go well with rice.

Hong Kong-style Pickled Vegetables – NT$30
Turns out Hong Kong-style pickled vegetables aren’t made with napa cabbage. Here, they include radish, carrot, and cucumber, offering a crisp texture with a tangy vinegar kick.

Roast Duck Rice – NT$85
The roast duck is glistening and picture-perfect, paired with just two simple side dishes. For someone with a big appetite, the portion might feel a bit small.

The roast duck meat is fresh, tender, and the skin has a fragrant, slightly chewy layer of fat.

Soy Sauce Chicken Rice – NT$85
The shop’s soy sauce chicken shattered my usual impression of the dish. It looked incredibly flavorful, and indeed it was — the moment you taste it, you can feel how tender and juicy the chicken is. With the well-infused flavors, Shadow really liked it.

A small sprinkle of chopped scallions and ginger adds a touch that compensates for the lack of fried shallots.

Char Siu and Crispy Pork Belly Platter – As a fan of char siu, I was instantly won over by this sweet and delicious version. The crispy pork belly, made from pork belly with skin, is roasted until the skin is caramelized and fragrant, with juicy, melt-in-your-mouth fat. The skin might be a concern for some women, but guys don’t seem to mind at all — my husband finished most of the crispy pork belly.

It’s a pity that the complimentary soup is served cold. Even though it was close to closing time, I still hoped for a warm bowl of soup to perfectly end the meal.

The boss is so young yet has such impressive skills — truly remarkable. The BBQ flavors really suit our taste, though the side dishes could be more varied for an even better experience. The shop does quite well in business — by 7 PM, most items were already sold out. For those wanting to try it, it’s best to come earlier to avoid a wasted trip. This delicious BBQ rice comes highly recommended.
