Baldness is a headache for many, but one Japanese hotel chain, “Hotel Tetora,” has launched exclusive discounts for bald guests—and the more severe the baldness, the greater the discount. With 20 branches across Japan, Hotel Tetora has offered its “Bald Discount” since August 2014, promoting the idea that the balder you are, the more you save.

The bald discount originated from a complaint by a former employee who spent a lot of time cleaning hair from drains while tidying rooms. After hearing about it, the president decided to offer discounts to bald guests. The discount amount varies by branch, typically ranging from 300 to 500 yen per night (about NT$75 to NT$130).

Guests wishing to avail of the bald discount must apply in advance. Upon check-in, hotel staff will assess the guest’s level of baldness to determine eligibility. Interestingly, Hotel Tetora’s president is himself bald, and Q-version dolls modeled after him are placed in each branch—guests who resemble the president more closely are more likely to receive the discount, sparking lively discussion and attention.
