MUJI’s minimalist style is beloved by travelers worldwide. After venturing into the hospitality and fresh produce markets, the brand is now setting its sights on train stations. Keihan Electric Railway has announced that Keihan Michi Station will undergo renovations, with the new station to be designed by MUJI. It is expected to officially open by the end of 2018, and once completed, it will become Japan’s first “MUJI Train Station.”

Keihan Holdings has announced that Michi Station in Hirakata City, Osaka, operated by Keihan Electric Railway, will be redesigned by Ryohin Keikaku, the company behind MUJI, and will make its debut with a refreshed look. The goal is to create a station that people actually want to visit. A large MUJI store will also open on the second floor of the connected Keihan Department Store.

This marks Ryohin Keikaku’s first foray into station interior design. The ticket gates inside and outside on the second floor of the station will feature wooden-textured flooring. A shop offering fresh food, side dishes, and dining options will also be built inside the ticket gate area, with renovations expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The MUJI store located within the Keihan Department Store is scheduled to open in May 2018.
