Since Taiwan issued chip-embedded passports in 2008, it has not only successfully secured visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or other visa facilitation benefits for Taiwanese passport holders in 166 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union, but has also earned recognition from countries and the international community. This time, to keep up with the rapid development of global anti-counterfeiting technology for identification documents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the upcoming issuance of the second-generation chip passport (e-Passport). This not only aligns with global trends but also effectively combats passport-related crimes and other illicit activities, enhancing both public security and diplomatic standing.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the second-generation chip passport not only adopts internationally advanced anti-counterfeiting technologies—such as adding a third image of the passport holder and using "metalized surface embossing" for the security laminate—but also upgrades the passport’s anti-counterfeiting capabilities. Additionally, the new passport features a complete redesign of its inner pages, showcasing iconic landmarks, scenic spots, and local cultures from various counties and cities across Taiwan. This not only highlights Taiwan’s diverse charm but also infuses the passport with a distinct “Taiwanese flavor.”

The fees for the second-generation chip passport remain unchanged, and the application requirements and procedures are the same as before. Currently held passports can still be used until their expiration dates, but holders also have the option to apply for the new second-generation chip passport early. This flexible approach offers greater convenience for travelers while ensuring increased safety abroad.
