When traveling abroad by plane, many passengers hope to get some rest during the flight. This is especially important for those on long-haul or overnight flights, or for those flying economy class. Knowing how to sleep well in the cabin is crucial. Below are four tips shared by aircraft designers that passengers can jot down for future reference when flying internationally.

1. Pre-select Your Seat
To sleep comfortably in economy class, pre-selecting your seat is a crucial factor. If seats are assigned randomly, you might end up in a noisy or bumpy area. By choosing your seat in advance, you can opt for a seat in the front rows. The advantage of sitting near the front is not only that you’ll feel less turbulence during the flight, but also that you’re farther from the engines, resulting in less disturbance.

2. Maximize Legroom
The typical legroom in economy class is around 80 centimeters, which allows for greater leg extension and helps with rest and sleep. Choosing an aisle seat in a bulkhead row or the first row next to a partition wall can provide more leg space. Aisle seats are also convenient, though the downside is that you may need to get up or make room for window-seat passengers who want to exit.

3. Control the Temperature
The temperature on airplanes is usually kept between 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, which is similar to the most comfortable temperature at home. If you feel too cold, you can ask the flight attendant for a blanket and pillow to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.

4. Prepare Personal Sleep Aids

To sleep well in unfamiliar surroundings, consider bringing your own sleep aids, such as an eye mask, earplugs, pillow, familiar scent, or even a personal travel pillow. Anything that helps create a familiar and comfortable atmosphere is worth trying.
