Taiwanese people face high work pressure, and many choose travel as a way to relieve stress, yet quite a few find themselves tied to work even while on vacation. A well-known booking website conducted a “2017 Global Holiday Deprivation Report” among about 15,000 respondents across 30 countries. The survey revealed that Taiwan has the lowest proportion of work-deprived holidays in Asia, but also the highest percentage globally of people who have to handle work matters while traveling.

The “2017 Global Holiday Deprivation Report” shows that over 90% of Taiwanese people follow a fixed leave system. Since discretionary leave systems are not common in Taiwan—mainly due to the prevalence of results-oriented work cultures—employees may end up taking fewer days off annually under work pressure than they would under a normal system. Compared to other Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, Taiwanese people have slightly better vacation rates, and nearly 60% stated they do not feel guilty about taking paid leave, as it is their right.

Taiwanese people love to travel, but they are often tied down by work. According to a survey by a well-known hotel booking website, although 44% of Taiwanese believe that work takes away their vacation time — the lowest percentage in Asia — compared to South Korea, which ranked first in vacation deprivation with 81% of respondents, the proportion of Taiwanese whose holidays are compromised is relatively much lower. However, nearly 60% of Taiwanese have canceled travel plans due to work-related reasons, and even when they do manage to go on trips, many still can't fully disconnect from work: almost 50% of Taiwanese say they need to answer work calls or check emails during their time off, the highest rate in the world!
