Winter is the prime season for plum blossoms. Across Taiwan, aside from the snow-like blooms in Nantou’s Xinyi Township, Taipei also boasts a plum blossom haven. While many parks in Taipei have quietly burst into plum blossom bloom, the Flower Trial Center on Yangmingshan features numerous paths blanketed with camellia petals, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of camellias, plums, and camellia flowers without traveling all the way to Nantou.

The Flower Trial Center on Yangmingshan is home to numerous camellias, plums, and camellia flowers. Camellias belong to the same family as camellia flowers but boast blossoms as elegant as plums, hence their name. The difference between camellias and camellia flowers lies in how their blossoms fall—camellia flowers drop as whole blooms, while camellias shed their petals one by one. Earlier in November, camellias bloomed in early spring, and now their fallen petals carpet the ground, complementing the currently blooming plums and camellia flowers to create a stunning interplay of colors.

If you’d rather not make the trip to Nantou to view plum blossoms, consider planning a fragrant floral excursion this holiday. Since the winter plum blossom season is shorter than that of most other flowers, flower-loving travelers shouldn’t miss out.
