Okayama Prefecture’s specialty “jeans ice cream” in Japan – the whole ice cream is blue

Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture has long taken pride in producing and designing jeans, featuring a unique jeans street scene and a jeans shopping district. Recently, a local shop exclusively developed “jeans” ice cream, giving the dessert a blue appearance and a taste with hints of taro – quite a unique treat.

The owner of the café “RIVETS” in Kurashiki City said that the indigo leaves used for hand-dyeing jeans, also known as Polygonum tinctorium, are a natural dye. Since the leaves themselves are edible and natural, they were added to the ice cream, which naturally takes on a light blue hue. The uniquely looking jeans ice cream not only has the inherent aroma of milk but also a subtle taro flavor. Unless you pay special attention to the color, you might not notice anything unusual about it.
