While the rest of the world is building skyscrapers, the “Shimao Quarry Bay Intercontinental Hotel” located in the Songjiang National Scenic Area in Shanghai is doing the opposite — creating the world’s lowest-altitude five-star hotel. It is the first-ever building constructed in an 80-meter-deep quarry, with architecture that looks as if it’s suspended on a cliff, full of a futuristic feel.

The Quarry Bay Intercontinental Hotel is the first-ever building constructed in an 80-meter-deep quarry
The Shimao Quarry Bay Intercontinental Hotel has taken years to build. The giant pit where the hotel is located was once an abandoned quarry. Due to its steep and unique terrain, the construction presented unprecedented technical challenges, and even equipment installation had to be done in reverse. It has now been completed and is expected to begin trial operations at the end of May.

The hotel has over 300 guest rooms, with two floors above ground, 16 underground, and two underwater. Its architectural structure conforms to the arc of the giant quarry pit, and all rooms are C-shaped to minimize environmental impact.
The hotel is divided into areas inside and outside the pit, including natural landscape waterfalls, indoor gardens, and more
