Originating from Fuzhou, the snack gua bao has gradually become a representative traditional delicacy of Taiwan. The white, flat, bun-like wrapper holds mouthwatering braised pork belly, paired with pickled mustard greens, cilantro, peanut powder, and sugar — a delightful explosion of flavors that has won over travelers from around the world and even earned it the nickname “Taiwanese hamburger.” Nowadays, many vendors not only creatively reinvent the traditional gua bao but also incorporate various hipster elements to create photogenic and delicious must-try treats.
1. Momo Tea
Momo Tea is tucked away in an unassuming alley in Tainan. Its low-key, simple storefront paired with the clearly historic old building leaves a lasting impression. As you approach the entrance, the aroma of braised pork wafts out from the small window, instantly stirring up hunger.

Momo Tea’s gua bao features chicken prepared using different cooking methods, with a new flavor option introduced daily. The hearty filling is paired with traditional Taiwanese-style ground tea made by stone-grinding high-mountain tea leaves — offering a unique take on classic flavors. The ancient taste of ground tea complements the exquisitely aged gua bao, all enjoyed within a nearly 50-year-old heritage building, creating a deeply nostalgic experience.

2. Yibao
The breakfast shop “Yibao” in Luzhou is quite unique. Unlike typical Western or Chinese breakfast spots, Yibao reinterprets the traditional gua bao through a street food-style presentation with a hipster twist. Starting out as a food stall by the arcade, its retro vibe was already eye-catching. It has since moved into a new storefront, where its popularity continues to grow, attracting foodies eager to try its signature offerings.

Yibao’s gua bao features tender, flavorful braised pork belly, pickled mustard greens, and wood ear mushrooms. The savory yet not overly salty taste, along with the sweet and tangy crunch of the vegetables, adds layers of texture without feeling greasy — making it a highly recommended local favorite. In addition to traditional gua bao, Yibao also offers creative “steamed bun burgers” made with mantou, alongside special radish cakes highlighting shredded radish — a true breakfast delight.
