Japan has always been a top travel destination for Taiwanese people. Aside from delicious food and beautiful scenery, many women also shop for cosmetics and beauty products. What are the restrictions for entering and exiting Japan? What can’t you bring? The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Japan has compiled a list of 2019 restrictions for both carry-on and checked baggage that travelers planning to visit Japan should take note of.

Cosmetics
According to regulations from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the capacity or weight of any single cosmetic item a passenger carries must not exceed 0.5 liters or 0.5 kilograms, and the total weight must not exceed 2 liters or 2 kilograms, regardless of whether it is carry-on or checked baggage.
Cosmetics subject to weight restrictions include nail polish, nail polish remover, and other nail care products; spray-on hair wax, hair dye, and other hair care products; skin care products such as sunscreen, facial cleansers, toners, and various cleaning agents or household detergents. All of these are included.
Makeup products such as foundation, lip balm, and lip gloss are not restricted under this regulation.
Medications
Most medications are allowed to be brought in.
However, disinfectants, anti-itch sprays for insect bites, anti-itch liquids, mosquito repellents, anti-inflammatory painkillers, and similar items are also subject to weight limits—each item must not exceed 0.5 liters or 0.5 kilograms, and the total combined weight must not exceed 2 liters or 2 kilograms.

Alcoholic beverages
Alcoholic beverages have different considerations depending on their alcohol content:
1. Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 24% or less can be checked in or carried on board.
2. Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 24% but below 70% must not exceed a total of 5 liters, and can be checked in or carried on board.
3. Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 70% or higher cannot be taken out of the country.
Food items
Meat products without accompanying inspection certificates are strictly prohibited from being brought into or out of Japan.
Taiwan currently also prohibits the entry of meat products.
Portable electronic devices(Lithium batteries)
If the lithium content in the built-in lithium battery of the electronic device is 2 grams or less, it can be checked in but must be completely powered off.
Items such as curling irons and straightening irons that contain lithium batteries are prohibited from being brought into the country; alternatively, you may remove the lithium battery and check in the device, while carrying the lithium battery in your hand luggage. Plug-in curling irons can be checked in or carried in hand luggage.
Other liquid items
Pesticides, paint, agricultural chemicals, hydrochloric acid, bleach, adhesives, gasoline, thinners, degreasers, and other liquids are all completely prohibited from being carried in any form.
In addition, if bleach or disinfectant ingredients contain “Xi素系” (organic peroxide) or bear the label “混ぜるな危?” (do not mix – danger), they are prohibited from being checked in or carried on board.
