Since being upgraded to a direct-controlled municipality, Taoyuan has actively developed tourism and landmark structures in recent years, including Taiwan’s largest open-air American-style shopping mall, Huatai Premium Outlets, the Taoyuan Airport MRT, and the groundbreaking of Terminal 3 at Taoyuan Airport. Now, it is set to build a design-forward municipal art museum in the Zhongzheng Cultural and Artistic Special Zone, connecting it with the surrounding 10-kilometer urban planning area to create a striking new tourist attraction.

“Hill” design wins competition for new art museum construction
After more than two months of evaluation, the design competition for the new Taoyuan City Art Museum construction was won by the “Hill” design proposed by Taiwan’s Shih Chao-Yung Architects in collaboration with Japan’s Yamamoto & Field Shop Co., Ltd. The design beat out renowned teams such as the Dutch MVRDV and Germany’s TOPOTEK1.

The art museum’s architecture is designed with the concept of “a playful exhibition space and a landscaped building.” Not only does it feature a bold and innovative hill-shaped exterior, but it also makes flexible use of space, cleverly integrating with Qingtang Park and the surrounding landscape. The main structure consists of two buildings — one with five floors above ground and one below, and the other with three floors above ground and one below — connected by an elevated skybridge in the middle.
