known as the “Land of a Thousand Ponds,” Taoyuan boasts not only picturesque pond landscapes but also many lakefront secrets waiting to be discovered. Located in Daxi District, Hou Cihu was once under military control, adding an air of mystery to this hidden utopia, which began opening to the public after restrictions were lifted.

Originally a small lake where General Chiang and his wife took walks and went boating, Hou Cihu’s walking trails begin at the side entrance of Cihu, pass over a small hill, and stretch about 2 kilometers. The route features enchanting scenery, along with remnants from the martial law period such as command posts, bunkers, iron gates, and offices — all well worth a visit.

The city government reopened the area to the public in 2009, preserving the original appearance of five official residences and reviving the history, ecology, and cultural lifestyle of the Chiang family, as well as recreating their home living spaces.

The park is rich in wildlife including human-faced spiders, birds, and frogs, and features a forest bathing trail lined with Taiwan’s endemic Hinoki cypress trees. Strolling along the path while admiring the reflections on the lake offers a taste of the leisure activities once enjoyed by national leaders.
