The hosting of the Nanshan Freeski Slopestyle Open has ignited the enthusiasm of domestic amateur freeskiers, providing a larger platform for amateur talents to showcase themselves.While international athletes such as the Chinese-American phenom Eileen Gu and the handsome Italian Manuel Dioli stole the spotlight in the first edition, local Chinese skiers also achieved remarkable results.Wang Zhi (aka fox) claimed second place with two high-flying 720+540 jumps from the kicker and smooth rail tricks.Bai Xiaonuan’s Mute+180 jump trick and Jianxin’s Tail+Safety grabs from both kickers earned them the women’s second and third places respectively.Some of the most eye-catching performances came from “Coolest Grab” winner Xiao Yuan, “Best Jump Trick” winner Haijia, and “Best Rail Trick” winner Kele, who delivered a visual feast of freeskiing and showcased the high level of China’s top slopestyle skiers.Meanwhile, “Most Passionate Award” winner Suit Guy stunned the crowd by landing a Double Backflip (double rotation backward somersault) after the competition.In the development of domestic freeskiing, enthusiasts started practicing on small kickers at Nanshan — straight airs, grabs, 360s, 720s… Fueled by their passion for skiing, they gradually unlocked more advanced skills.At the “1st Nanshan Freeski Slopestyle Open,” Chen Jiangtao (online alias: Dilei SKI), winner of the “Most Rotations Award,” successfully landed a tucked 1080 spin off a 10-meter kicker at Nanshan’s Mellow Park on December 26, 2015. This marked a new milestone in the jumping ability of amateur freeskiers in China. Though a small step for Dilei, it was a historic moment for Chinese freeskiing. Though the sport is still young in China, with its rapid growth, we believe more talent will emerge from the ranks of recreational skiers. As the saying goes: “Yesterday’s impossibility is today’s limit, and tomorrow’s routine.”And the Nanshan Freeski Slopestyle Open will continue to accompany the growth of more domestic freeskiers and witness many more historic moments.The “2nd Nanshan Freeski Slopestyle Open” will return as scheduled on January 24, 2016. The competition consists of a Freeski Jam Session (on the intermediate course at Nanshan Mellow Park) and a Slopestyle Contest (on the advanced course at Nanshan Mellow Park).
Freeski slopestyle enthusiasts may choose to enter one or both competitions based on their preference.*No nationality restrictions for participants.*Must have proficient freestyle freeskiing skills.*Must have at least two ski seasons or a cumulative 30 days of skiing experience.The 2nd Nanshan Freeski Slopestyle Open has drawn attention from New Zealand’s Cardrona Ski Resort. The men’s and women’s champions and runners-up of this edition will receive six days and seven nights of accommodation and skiing at New Zealand’s Cardrona Ski Resort.
