This year’s flower expo kicked off in November in Taichung, with various parts of the city quietly undergoing beautification and construction work. Among them, a newly built “Dividing Water Path” at the Waipu District site in Taichung offers a clear view of the aquatic ecosystem. Walking through it feels like being inside an aquarium, observing the underwater space of an ecological pond. Here, you can admire aquatic plants above water, on the surface, and below — attracting much attention.

The approximately 105-meter-long “Dividing Water Path” divides the ecological pond in the Waipu District area into two parts. The underwater section is about 36.5 meters long, with various aquatic plants planted along both sides of the path. These include floating plants on the water’s surface such as Taiwan water lily and watercress, emergent plants in the water like water celery, variegated iris, and submerged plants such as different-leaved hydrocotyle. This adds a uniquely aquatic scene to the otherwise floral and agricultural Waipu District, making it quite an interesting attraction.

At the flattest and lowest point of the Dividing Water Path, 14 glass observation windows have been installed. In addition to allowing visitors to see different layers of aquatic plants at once, these windows also use independently circulating purified water systems to maintain clean water quality. Paired with underwater lighting around the viewing windows, visitors feel as if they are in an aquarium, able to observe various forms of aquatic plants and animals — a rare and special experience seldom seen in Taiwan.
