As Typhoon Maria approaches, a land warning was issued at 11:30 PM on the 9th. Most of Taiwan maintained normal work and school schedules on the 10th, but Yilan County was the first to announce a work and school suspension after 3:00 PM.

Typhoon Maria (international name: MARIA) was centered at 23.9°N, 127.2°E at 8:00 AM on the 10th – approximately 560 km east of Yilan over the sea. It was moving northwestward at a speed of 28 km/h. The central pressure was 920 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 53 m/s (approx. 191 km/h), equivalent to a Force 16 wind. The maximum gust speed reached 65 m/s (approx. 234 km/h), equivalent to a Force 17+ wind. The radius of the 7-level gale zone was 280 km, and the 10-level gale zone was 100 km. It is forecast to be located at 26.3°N, 120.5°E at 8:00 AM on the 11th – approximately 180 km northwest of Keelung over the sea.
The areas under alert include:Yilan, New Taipei, Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, Hualien, and Matsu – all should remain on high alert.Also be prepared for strong winds and heavy rainfall.
The Central Weather Bureau has issued a torrential rain special report for areas north of Taichung, while mountainous regions in central and southern Taiwan must also guard against heavy rainfall.China Airlines, EVA Air, Peach Aviation, and other carriers have canceled or delayed multiple flights between Taipei, Kaohsiung, and destinations such as Okinawa and Sendai. Be sure to check before departure. The strongest winds and rains are expected from the evening of the 10th through the early morning of the 11th; work and school suspension statuses will continue to be updated.
