New Look for Rainbow Village at Nighttime Illumination Boosts Its Photogenic Appeal

Located in Taichung, Rainbow Village is not only a popular spot on Instagram but also attracts countless international visitors. It has been featured as one of Taiwan’s top ten Instagram check-in spots by a British travel website, voted by Japanese netizens as one of their dream photo locations, and was also selected as one of the world’s hidden wonders by the international travel guide Lonely Planet.

The village was established when nine veterans applied to the Ministry of National Defense for land and built it themselves on about 300 ping of space. Out of the original nine dilapidated houses in what was once a deserted hamlet, the creative touch of 96-year-old "Rainbow Grandpa" transformed it into an amazing tourist destination.

The grandpa wakes up at 4 a.m. every day to paint or touch up the walls, never tiring of it. With every brushstroke, he brings colors to life—his work is playful, lively, imaginative, and vividly colorful, radiating healing energy that brings joy and evokes childlike wonder. He continuously restores and updates his art, while also preserving some of his original pieces, so each visit offers new surprises and emotions.

Media outlets from over 20 regions including Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and mainland China have interviewed and reported on the village. Thousands of visitors come every day. The lighting display runs from dusk until around 9 p.m., making it a great time to avoid the crowds and the scorching sun—plus, you get to enjoy a different side of Rainbow Village.
