Tainan’s Crystal Chapel attracted one million visitors a year when it opened in 2014, but at that time, people could only look from afar and not enter—quite a pity. To allow public use of the chapel, the Yunlin National Scenic Area Administration specially applied to the city government for construction permits and usage licenses. Finally, the Crystal Chapel has transformed from being a “piece of installation art” into a legally recognized building. It is expected to host its first official wedding by the end of September, and during non-wedding times, it will be open free of charge to general visitors.

The design of the Crystal Chapel draws inspiration from the Sydney Opera House in Australia and Guam’s St. Laguna Chapel (also known as the Crystal Chapel), using stacked mounds of salt—linking large piles with smaller ones—as its form. The main color scheme is the white of salt, inspired by the crystal clarity of crystallized salt. To maintain the romantic ambiance of Tainan’s Crystal Chapel, the exterior of the surrounding site has been repainted, and a walking path around the chapel has been added. The landscape pool and grass areas have also been improved, along with the construction of a spiral shimmering canopy installation artwork.

The Crystal Chapel is the first church planned by a government agency and is one of the scenic spots for “wedding photo perfection.” Previously, the Public Works Bureau determined that the spiral shimmering canopy and the Crystal Chapel shared the same land parcel number, requiring a separate building permit—this caused delays in the entire process. Now, the formal usage license has been obtained, and the site has been leased to an outsourced operator to plan its future management.

Within the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Coastal National Scenic Area, the largest “wedding photography”-themed destination in Taiwan, the “Beimen Wedding Beauty Spot,” has been created. The park features many themed scenic facilities such as the Love Ice Museum, Love Happiness Café, and the romantic Crystal Chapel. In the future, the surrounding areas will continue to be developed with more installations to attract couples and newlyweds to visit and take photos.
