A Japanese-style Castle Hidden in the Mountains: New Taipei City’s “Crown Prince Guesthouse” Reopens

The Crown Prince Guesthouse at New Taipei City’s Gold Ecological Park was severely damaged by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015 and was temporarily closed to the public. After nearly a year of renovation, the park has reopened part of the guesthouse’s outdoor space starting December, along with new informational display boards to help visitors better appreciate this beautiful Japanese-style building.

Covering an area of 360 pyeong, the Crown Prince Guesthouse resembles a Japanese-style castle hidden within the mountains and forests of northern Taiwan. Its elegant Japanese garden and surrounding scenery showcase the former glory of the Jinguashi mining area. However, in August 2015, Typhoon Soudelor caused severe damage, leading to its temporary closure. Now, the management has reopened part of the outdoor space, allowing visitors to explore and take photos in the authentically Japanese garden, while also learning about the building’s history and the restoration process.
