In recent years, many people have started taking their parents on trips abroad. If your travel companion is your parent and you choose to go on anindependent trip, there are many details that need special attention—especially for beginners. From planning the itinerary to transportation and food, you need to be careful at every step, otherwise what was meant to be a fun trip may turn into a test of the parent-child relationship.

1. It’s best to start with big cities
When taking elders abroad, choosing the destination is very important. After all, the first challenge of an independent trip is transportation. If you end up in a city with poor transport or one where you have to walk tens of thousands of steps a day, it might be too much for many seniors. Therefore, cities with convenient transport like TokyoTokyo, Osaka in Japan or Seoul and Busan in South Korea are all good choices.

2. Don’t overpack the itinerary
When traveling abroad, some travelers believe that since they’ve come all this way, they must visit as many attractions as possible to feel like they’ve truly experienced the country. But most elders are older, so stamina and physical condition should be the top priority when arranging the itinerary. Therefore, try not to plan too many attractions in one day—stick to one or two, and include smaller nearby spots. If you find that the elders aren’t interested when you arrive, you can quickly switch to another smaller spot.

3. Diet
Many people love to try new foods when traveling abroad, but for many elders, trying new things—especially food—is definitely a no-go. So whether you’re traveling independently or with a group, it’s best to arrange a schedule that aligns with their usual habits, and follow their eating preferences. Don’t just focus on popular queue-worthy spots ormust-eatdishes. If the food doesn’t suit their taste, they might spend the rest of the trip complaining about it.

Accommodation is the most important aspect when traveling with parents, and getting good sleep is key. (Image/Stocksnap)

4. Accommodation and Daily Life
When taking parents abroad, accommodation is absolutely crucial. Having a spacious and clean room is the basic requirement. But how to ensure that the elders can get a good night’s sleep and recharge for the next part of the journey is a major challenge for beginners.
