Early Hsinchu developed a nearly 90-year-old glass craft industry thanks to the availability of two key raw materials for glassmaking—silica sand and natural gas. To continue this local glass art tradition, the “2018 Hsinchu City Glass Art & Design Festival” takes “Light in Motion” as its theme, imagining glass and light as companions and thereby exploring their relationship. The festival features seven major themed exhibition zones, inviting 20 groups of artists and designers to participate. It extends the beauty and novelty of glass from everyday life.

The most talked-about artwork in this exhibition is “Circulating 143 / 33,000 Beams of Light,” located at the center of the venue. It uses large panels of tempered glass combined with 33,000 recycled and remade 143 glass cups, along with 500 large LED light panel modules that emit light upward from below. Coupled with symmetrical mirrored walls on both sides, it presents an infinitely extending visual tension, making the viewing experience feel like being inside a dreamlike glass house.
The circulation route within the exhibition area is very spacious and bright, with a strong sense of perspective.
The exhibition is held at the “Feng Livehouse” venue in Hsinchu East Park. Under the “Light in Motion” theme, it brings together seven exhibition zones: Gaze is Light, Design is Light, Refraction of City God Temple, Culture is Light, Healing Glass, Art is Light, and “Circulating 143 / 33,000 Beams of Light.”
The artworks in the exhibition zones make full use of the various characteristics of glass to showcase its beauty.
Among them, “Gaze is Light - Eight Focused Glass Vistas” invites eight curators to share everyday glassware, exploring the aesthetics of life through light and shadow. “Design is Light - Six New Units Holding Culture” extends the new Hsinchu units that serve snacks from the 143 cups, combining pickled vegetables, tea, plants, local specialties, and souvenirs.

The mirror walls with an infinitely extending effect have quotes from psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung posted above: “The human soul does not derive its value from the imagination of heaven or hell, but from the darkness and uncertainty of the future; it is not something that is easily understood, nor is it always welcomed.” These words interpret the essence of the world.
The exhibition zone features specially designed perspective flooring that offers visitors a very unique experience.
