Europe’s Most Romantic Square—Brussels Grand Place

The Brussels Grand Place is the central square of Brussels, the capital of Belgium in Western Europe. The square was first built in the 12th century. Though not very large, measuring approximately 110 meters in length and 60 meters in width, it is surrounded by medieval guildhalls, and the tower of the Town Hall is the tallest structure in the square, standing at about 91 meters. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe.

In the 16th century, the Brussels Grand Place was a site for public executions. Many religious reformers and noble dukes were executed here. The square also suffered during wartime, with surrounding buildings being damaged. It took years of restoration to become as beautiful as it is today. The great French writer Victor Hugo once described the Brussels Grand Place as the most beautiful square in the world.

This gleaming building, covered in gold leaf, was once the residence of the Dukes of Brabant. It later served as offices for securities companies and various guilds, and parts of the building have now been converted into hotels and restaurants.

Located opposite the Town Hall, the Brussels City Museum, also known as the Maison du Roi, has been transformed into a museum showcasing numerous local artworks and ceramics. Its most famous collection consists of nearly 700 costumes gifted from around the world for the “Manneken Pis” (the peeing boy statue).

The square is full of life, dotted with all kinds of bars, restaurants, gift shops, cafés, and dessert stores. Travelers who have walked enough can relax by sitting or lying down on the square, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.
