Attention travelers planning to visit Europe in the future: The European Union implemented the ETIAS (Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System) in 2021. From now on, travelers who are currently visa-exempt for the EU must apply online for an entry permit before traveling to any EU country and can only enter after approval.

This “European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)” was introduced to combat terrorism, secure European borders, and address illegal immigration issues. Starting in 2021, all travelers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the EU must register and apply for an “ETIAS electronic travel authorization” online before entering Europe. The application involves a processing fee of €7, and the authorization is valid for three years. During this period, travelers can enter the Schengen Area multiple times without restrictions, but must still comply with the regulation of not staying more than 90 days at a time.

According to the EU Economic and Trade Office (EETO), the ETIAS electronic travel authorization is not a visa, and Taiwanese citizens still enjoy visa-free access to the EU. Travelers don’t need to worry about the application process taking a lot of time either — usually, you’ll get confirmation on whether your application is approved shortly after submitting it online.
