In recent years, Taiwan has seen a surge in the popularity of independent travel. Aside from Japan and South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia have recently become top choices for many DIY travelers—thanks to their affordability, safety, proximity, and delicious food, which all appeal to the wanderlust of travelers.

1.Safety
When it comes to safety, Singapore is undoubtedly excellent. In recent years, Malaysia has also seen significant improvements in safety due to government policies. As long as you stay within tourist areas, it’s generally very safe. Just be mindful of where you place your valuables—avoid being too flashy—and ladies should stay aware of their surroundings. Try to avoid dark alleys at night, and you shouldn’t encounter any safety issues.

2.Architecture
Singapore boasts a rich variety of architectural styles. Whether it’s the modern and sleek buildings in Marina Bay, centuries-old monasteries, or luxury hotels transformed from former post offices, there’s plenty to admire. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Nanyang-style architecture is also quite distinctive. Due to its multicultural population, the country has developed a unique architectural culture that’s well worth seeing.

3.Culture
Singapore and Malaysia are both highly multicultural due to their geographic locations. In addition to indigenous peoples, Malaysia is home to Chinese, Malays, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans, and more, making it a country that blends many cultural elements. Singapore, being close to Malaysia and a hub for vibrant commerce and international investment, hosts a large number of people from Europe, America, and various parts of Southeast Asia, contributing to its rich diversity.

4.Distance
Flying directly from Taiwan to Kuala Lumpur or Sabah takes only about 3 to 4 hours—about the same as flying to Tokyo. Also, without significant peak or off-peak travel seasons, you can find round-trip flights for just a few thousand Taiwan dollars all year round. There’s no time difference between Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore, which adds to the convenience.
