Sapporo’s national Hokkaido University features historic nostalgic school buildings nestled among elm trees (spring elms) and ginkgos, with dreamy scenery that attracts many tourists. In Tomakomai, it owns vast research forests. Although these are research forests for Hokkaido University’s Faculty of Agriculture, parts are also open to visitors. Spanning 2,700 hectares, the area is expansive, and every autumn when the maples change color, it draws numerous visitors.

This golden tunnel is a popular autumn spot in Hokkaido for both ginkgo and maple viewing. The most beautiful period for the ginkgo avenue is from late October to early November each year. This year, Hokkaido University will hold the “Hokkaido University Golden Leaf Festival” on October 27 and 28 over two consecutive days, closing off sections of the ginkgo-lined North 13th Avenue.

Every year when the ginkgos at Hokkaido University turn a brilliant golden canopy, the “Hokkaido University Golden Leaf Festival” is held. Not only students but all visitors from outside can enjoy the scenery together. At last year’s Golden Leaf Festival, over 20,000 visitors joined in just two days.

The Golden Leaf Festival site not only features stalls offering heartwarming food, but also includes performances on mini stages, hands-on experiment classes for families, and nature workshops. At night, the ginkgo avenue is LIGHTED UP, offering a variety of beautiful, dreamy, and romantic views both during the day and at night.
