NASA’s official Twitter account NASA ICE, part of Operation IceBridge, recently shared a photo showing a massive rectangular iceberg in the Larsen Ice Shelf area of Antarctica, leaving people amazed — yet geologist Trevor Nace explained that this is a natural phenomenon.

Most people’s impression of icebergs is that they usually have pointed tips, but in fact, there is another type of iceberg that is less commonly seen — the "tabular iceberg" (tabular icebergs). Nace stated,NASAscientist Kelly Brunt (Kelly Brunt) once pointed out that tabular icebergs have steep, nearly90degree sides and flat tops, and typically break off from ice shelves.

Tabular icebergs are usually relatively "young" icebergs, as wind and waves eventually erode away their vertical sides. Nace said that floating icebergs typically have only 10% of their mass above the sea surface, though it’s unclear from NASA’s photo whether this iceberg is entirely afloat or has some portion resting on the seabed.
