Established in 1994, Jan Ji Spicy Hot Pot has earned the title of “Must-Try Spicy Hot Pot in Taipei.” It's a go-to spot recommended by foodies through word of mouth. The new signboard draws inspiration from the gold foil fonts and neon light strips used in many buildings in the 1990s. As a result, during the day the sign reads “Jan Ji Dunnan Building,” but when lit up at night, it transforms into “Jan Ji Spicy Hot Pot.”
Since reopening, the crowd has been as packed as ever.
The new store was jointly created by Ben Shi Space Production and Ten Mouths United Architects. The most iconic feature of the interior—the translucent ceiling—is inspired by the once wildly popular dance halls across Taiwan, complemented by white fluorescent tubes to create a full-on 1990s Taiwanese vibe.
The retro window frames are particularly eye-catching.
The design of the kitchen pass-through is also quite ingenious. Designers used the balcony of an old building, adding aluminum anti-fall window frames shaped like sunsets, resulting in a highly nostalgic and vintage aesthetic.
The decor next to the seating area also has a strong Taiwanese flavor.
The seating layout uses common building materials such as galvanized iron, pink vertical striped glass, and walnut wood. The seats were specially custom-made using floral fabric to recreate classic floral-patterned chairs. With its outwardly 1990s retro look, the Jan Ji Spicy Hot Pot Dunnan Second Branch has reopened with a richly Taiwanese style, allowing foodies to continue enjoying those memorable flavors.
