2019 was the final year of the Heisei era. Emperor Akihito of Japan abdicated on April 30, 2019, bringing the Heisei era to a close after 31 years.
Many enthusiasts of postal products actively seek out items from the last Heisei year, among which New Year greeting cards (nengajo) are one of the most iconic products. Many designs are also displayed in dedicated sections at convenience stores for purchase.
Japan Post began selling these items on November 2. In addition to motifs and patterns symbolizing the Year of the Pig (Hai), postcards and stamps featuring symbols such as Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Disney, and Snoopy have also drawn significant attention. Those interested in collecting should grab them early to avoid potential shortages as New Year’s approaches.
