The Shimao Quarry International Hotel Shanghai is the world’s lowest-altitude five-star hotel and the first ever built inside a massive 80-meter-deep pit. Its architecture appears to hang off the cliffside, giving it a futuristic feel.
Due to the steep and unique terrain, it posed unprecedented construction challenges.
The giant pit where the hotel is located was once an abandoned quarry from the Japanese occupation period. Because of the rugged and distinctive landscape, not only did the construction push technical boundaries, but even equipment installation had to be done in reverse.
The hotel is divided into above-ground and underground sections, including natural landscape waterfalls and indoor gardens.
