According to a report from the Central Weather Administration, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Penghu at 7:57 AM this morning. Areas including Penghu, Kinmen, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan felt tremors of magnitude 3, while Nantou and Kaohsiung felt magnitude 2, and New Taipei City also experienced magnitude 1 tremors.

The deputy director of the Seismological Center at the Central Weather Administration stated that Taiwan is located on the Eurasian Plate. When the Eurasian Plate collides with the Philippine Sea Plate, earthquakes occur in the eastern seas, and the seismic force is transferred and accumulates in the western seabed plates.

When the western seabed plates accumulate enough energy, they release it — which is what caused today’s intraplate earthquake. It is impossible to predict when or where such an event will happen. The last earthquake in the waters off Penghu occurred 24 years ago, making this occurrence very rare.
The weather bureau also noted that this morning’s earthquake was a shallow one, and the released energy was quickly absorbed by the Earth's layers, posing no danger.
