France saw one of the worst riots in decades earlier this month in Paris, where demonstrators wearing "Yellow Vests" set cars ablaze in the streets to protest the government's fuel tax increase. They even broke into nearby shops to loot items and went as far as damaging symbolic landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe and the Marianne statue representing the Republic.

In total, 412 people were arrested and 133 injured during the riots. The French government urgently convened meetings to discuss countermeasures and dialogue with protesters, and even considered declaring a state of emergency to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Key traffic routes near the Arc de Triomphe, as well as the renowned tourist and shopping destination of the Champs-Élysées and the surrounding areas of the Tuileries Garden, were littered with debris and charred car remains. Many shops and buildings were also vandalized with graffiti.

Police temporarily closed off large areas of central Paris, blocked access roads to the Arc de Triomphe, shut down more than 20 metro stations, ordered shops to close early, and fired tear gas. This riot was one of the most serious instances of urban violence in France in recent years.
On Saturday, December 8, the fourth Yellow Vest protest took place, with demonstrators demanding Macron’s resignation. The atmosphere was tense, resulting in 4 deaths and multiple injuries. Paris police arrested around 1,300 protesters. The demonstrations filled the Champs-Élysées with chants and protests, making the area relatively unsettled recently.
