Frankfurt

Frankfurt

Frankfurt isn’t actually very big. Since I’d already visited most of the places I wanted to see yesterday, I decided not to set an alarm this morning (it was my first time going out without one). When I woke up, the breakfast buffet was still open until ten, which was great. Yay—milk, cereal, yogurt, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggs—a nutritious and hearty breakfast. I took my time eating before getting ready to go out. I brushed my teeth in a rush, didn’t even shave, and dashed downstairs. When I got to the restaurant, it seemed the breakfast was still available. Perfect.

I forgot to take photos of the European Central Bank yesterday, so I went back to snap some. Then I planned to visit the city’s tallest building, the Main Tower, later in the afternoon. The observation deck costs €6.5 to access.

I walked to the opera house, but apparently there was a street marathon today and the roads were closed. There were cups all over the fountain area—it’s really not very eco-friendly...

Opera House

The opera house looks kinda like... the trading floor of a stock exchange? There were several stone pillars nearby, each with intricate carvings. I really liked the designs. They gave the place a stately feel. Then I looked around more carefully and noticed something—I think there's a memorial statue for someone here?

I went to the church shown on the tourist map, but when I arrived, I found it was under renovation, and the hoardings were covered in graffiti. A sacred church meets street art—an interesting contrast.

I walked past the shopping street from yesterday—it was completely empty because it was Sunday, and most shops were closed. Only a few eateries were open. Coupled with the road closures, it felt totally different from yesterday. I actually prefer quieter places. The same spot felt more peaceful and had a different vibe.

I went back to take photos of the exterior of St. Paul’s Church and went inside for a visit. It’s been turned into an exhibition hall, with displays about the history of the German parliament and this church. The church was heavily damaged during the war and was gradually restored afterward. There was also a painting exhibition on the theme of trees on the lower level. The second floor seemed to be for gatherings, with lots of seating and a large organ still in place.

I grabbed a hamburger at the Old Town Hall Square. It was hot, cost only €2.5, and tasted pretty good. I passed by the Frankfurt Museum. The ticket was €9, but the staff asked if I was a student—if so, I could get a discounted student ticket. I said I wished I still were a student.

With plenty of time left, I decided to visit a museum that interested me and ultimately chose the Architecture Museum. After crossing the iron bridge, the sunny river view was much more appealing than the overcast scenery from last night.

I went into the cinema museum lobby and stayed for a while before leaving and heading to the Architecture Museum. The staff mentioned an €18 museum pass, but since it was already past 3 PM, I figured I wouldn’t have enough time to visit another museum. Besides, I didn’t want to rush today—I’d just stick with this one. The entrance fee was €9.

Inside the Architecture Museum, there were various architectural models and blueprints, including famous local structures such as the Main Tower. I also spotted a model of the Musee des Confluences by the sea in Lyon.(If you’re interested, check out http://travelwilson.blogspot.hk/2015/09/52-7-jul-2015-day-3-lyon.html). The second floor focused on space, featuring items like space capsules and astronaut suits. The third floor displayed twenty-two architectural models ranging from ancient to modern times. The fourth floor held a photography exhibition. I took my time and ended up spending about an hour there.

I walked by the Main River again, looking at the Ferris wheel and glass skyscrapers by the water—it reminded me a bit of Hong Kong’s Central district, and I suddenly felt a bit homesick...

I had planned to go up to the top, so I headed back to the Main Tower. The elevator ride to the observation deck was quick. Once I got there, I saw a sea of high-rises around me. The closest and tallest one was the headquarters of Deutsche Bahn (German Railways). From here, you can overlook the entire city. The train station has so many tracks—it must be one of the largest and busiest in Europe.

I went back to the hotel to rest for a bit and sort out my travel arrangements to Manchester. It was after seven when I finally headed to the train station for dinner. There were quite a few options there. I had a slightly salty curry beef rice with red beans. After eating, I bought a pack of milk, only to find out it was actually yogurt.

It’s just completing the Frankfurt leg of the trip in T?Mipuxing? Here, it’s the vibe of a city—nothing particularly special, not as charming as other small towns. It’s fine as a stopover on your journey; two days and one night are more than enough.
