Right at the start of 2016, a selection of world architecture was announced — nine buildings chosen by CNN as the “Most Anticipated New Urban Landmarks of 2016.” Most feature sleek, stylish designs, with locations spanning from Abu Dhabi in the Middle East to New York and London in the United States and the UK, and Taipei. Travelers now have even more amazing spots to check out on their global adventures.
1. Zayed National Museum (Abu Dhabi)
Designed by a British architect and shaped like bird wings, the Zayed National Museum is set to open this year, showcasing the history and culture of the UAE.
2. Louvre Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi)
Designed by a French architect, this Louvre in Abu Dhabi features a lattice-style roof. When sunlight streams into the building, it creates a stunning effect known as a “rain of light.”
3. World Trade Center Transportation Hub (New York)
After 12 years — and numerous delays and rising construction costs — the World Trade Center station is finally set to debut. Its shape resembles a bird taking flight from the palm of a hand, and when lit up at night, the bird appears to “glow,” illuminating the surrounding area.
4. Museum of Latin American Art (Miami)
Located in Florida, the Museum of Latin American Art brings renewed attention to a city that’s already a hotspot for art and design.
5. Tate Modern Extension (London)
The Tate Modern is already an iconic landmark in London, and its new extension uses the same brick tones as the original 1950s structure. This seamless blend makes the extension and the original building flow together beautifully — definitely worth a visit.
