The 2017 pop-up in Taiwan caused a ticket-buying craze, and teamLab has now built the massive immersive space “teamLab Planets” in Tokyo’s Toyosu. Within three months of its opening, the exhibition attracted over 650,000 visitors. The venue spans 10,000 square meters, where an enormous collection of immersive artworks can be fully experienced. Ticket sales for the 2019 Lunar New Year period have already begun, with discounted prices available for weekday entries.
An all-encompassing, infinitely expanding universe of light where visitors can project elements of the cosmos from their own smartphones, becoming co-creators of this space and influencing one another.
A three-dimensional form is created by the gathering of light points, and numerous glowing three-dimensional objects come together to paint an entire cosmic space — an interactive work that extends in all directions.
The exhibition period runs from July 7, 2018, to autumn 2020, as a limited-time exhibition for two years. The “DMM.Planets Art by teamLab” held in Tokyo’s Odaiba in 2016, which lasted 47 days, sparked a craze with wait times of over six hours, and was named by CNN as one of the most moving visual moments of 2016.
In the giant dome space, the entire artwork is generated through computer programs with zero time lag, making every moment unique and unrepeatable.
The life of flowers — from birth, growth, bud formation, blooming, wilting, withering, to death — follows an eternal cycle of its own.
The 2018 iteration of “teamLab Planets” features a significantly expanded scale, showcasing seven major themes including:
1. An all-encompassing, infinitely expanding universe of light: “The Infinite Crystal Universe”
2. A work in a giant dome space: “Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers”
3. An artwork that unfolds infinitely on the water’s surface: “Dancing with the Carp – Infinity”
