Travelers who have been too busy to hit the mountains to admire the autumn leaves recently, don’t worry. The red-leaf wonderland in Alishan will gradually turn crimson, reaching its most beautiful state by mid-January next year. It’s not too late to find out about it now—start planning and get ready to head up the mountain for some leaf-peeping.

The Shimen Valley Trail in Fengshan Township, Alishan, sees its maple foliage peak around mid-January each year.
Visiting at the right time allows you to enjoy both the crimson leaves on the trees and those carpeting the ground.
Starting from the trailhead and walking the loop takes about 5–6 hours.
On a nice day, you’re likely to encounter fellow hikers along the way.
The trail isn’t very difficult, but you should still bring basic hiking gear.
The vibrant red leaves look as if painted with a palette.
Walking through the valley, you’ll also see many towering ancient trees, majestic and spectacular.
Orange-red fallen leaves blanket the entire trail.
