Although the craze for Pokémon Go has gradually died down, it turns out that besides getting more people outdoors hunting for Pokémon, this game also has another effect: it has brought life to a well-known suicide spot in Fukui, Japan!

It is said that in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, there is a place called Tojinbo. Due to years of erosion by the sea waves, a section of cliff along the Sea of Japan coastline has become steep and rugged, forming a 1-kilometer-long natural cliff face. As a result, it has become Japan’s second most popular suicide site, with nearly 100 people attempting to take their own lives here each year. To prevent such incidents, the local government has implemented various measures, such as setting up a public telephone booth called the “Life Line” and deploying staff and volunteers for patrols.
However, unexpectedly, thanks to the Pokémon Go game, it has attracted a group of Pokémon trainers, making the area bustling with activity — and this has indirectly deterred those who might attempt suicide!
