Operated by Hyatt Hotels Group under a mandate from Singapore’s Ho Lee Group, Grand Hyatt Taipei has been located in Taipei’s Xinyi District for nearly 30 years and was the city’s first international five-star hotel. Recently, however, it has been reported that the hotel will soon shut its doors and undergo a rebranding due to the expiration of its contract, but Grand Hyatt Taipei has not commented on the matter.

According to media reports, apart from the contract expiration, the closure of Grand Hyatt Taipei is mainly because Hyatt Hotels Group’s two upscale brands—Park Hyatt and Andaz—are set to enter the future Taipei Sky Tower (A7). Meanwhile, the Ho Lee Group also plans to introduce its own brand, rebrand the property, and continue operations.

Industry insiders believe that the Ho Lee Group owns multiple hotel brands, such as Millennium Hotels, and if this plan proceeds, Grand Hyatt Taipei may very likely be renamed “Taipei Millennium Hotel.”

Since its opening in 1990, Grand Hyatt Taipei has been Taipei’s first international five-star hotel. It was built on land leased from the Taipei City Government with funding from Singapore’s Ho Lee Group and was operated by Hyatt Hotels Group. At that time, no other international hotels had entered Taiwan, and coinciding with the economic boom, Grand Hyatt Taipei also became a major contributor to the development of the Xinyi business district.

Competition among international high-end hotels in the Xinyi District is fierce, prompting Hyatt Group to decide to introduce even more premium hotel brands to compete. It is understood that the Ritz-Carlton was originally slated to enter Taipei Sky Tower, but Hyatt Group intervened, leading to the selection of Park Hyatt and Andaz instead. This move shows that Hyatt is well-prepared to take on the highly competitive hotel market with top-tier brands.
